Urban Dictionary και Slang

1. The ever-evolving bastardization of the written and spoken language as a result of social and cultural idolization of uneducated, unitelligable celebrities.

Ex. Aw shnap, son. Check out the fine ass sho-tee rockin' all dat ice. Translation: Hello, my good sir. Take a gander at the beautiful woman wearing the expensive jewels.

2. Τhe only reason Urbandictionary.com exists

www.urbandictionary.com is a slang online dictionary. "Define your World"

3. What Urban Dictionary was meant to define. Now all you see are posts made by idiotic teenagers that just want to rip on school and authorities

Slang words: tight, noob, gay. NOT slang: school, police, parents.

Συνέχισα κάνοντας μια μικρή έρευνα (πού αλλού; στον φίλο μου τον Googlo πάλι) για την λέξη αυτή και ανακάλυψα τι δεν είναι slang.

What Slang is NOT!

Slang is not "whatever is new or popular in the way of language" (Historical Dictionary of American Slang).

Dialect: Cohesive, chiefly regional and socioeconomic varieties of a language (Historical Dictionary of American Slang)

Catch Phrases: Cultural phrases which derive their meaning from a cultural reference with which the speaker and listener must both be familia r. (Crystal 178) Examples: Who loves ya, baby? (Kojak) Hasta la vista, baby. (Terminator) Beam me up, Scotty. (Star Trek)

Jargon: (1) the technical language of a special field; (2) the obscure use of specialized language. (Crystal 174)

Slogans: "A forceful, catchy, mind-grabbing utterance which will rally people to buy something or behave in a certain way." (Crystal 180) Examples: Make love, not war. fingerlickin' good! A sprinkle a day helps keep odors away!

Graffiti: "…any spontaneous or unauthorized writing or drawing on walls, vehicles, and other public places. It is typically obscene or political in character, but a great deal of humor and wisdom can also be found." (Crystal 181)

Examples: Lethargy rulezzzzzzzzzzz Kilroy Woz Here Lisa loves Michael

Argot or Cant: "Special vocabulary used by a secretive social group." (Crystal 448) Example: Pig Latin

Register: "In stylistics, a socially defined variety of language, such as scientific or legal English." (Crystal 457)

Colloquialism: "n. an expression used in ordinary conversation, but not regarded as slang" (Webster's Encyclopedia of Dictionaries 77) ; "simply informal English" (Historical Dictionary of American Slang)

Solecism: "n. breach of grammar; a breach of etiquette" (Webster's Encyclopedia of Dictionaries 355) Example: "He don't know better."

  1. SEX

    1. Software EXchange. A technique invented by the blue-green algae hundreds of millions of years ago to speed up their evolution, which had been terribly slow up until then. Today, SEX parties are popular among hackers and others (of course, these are no longer limited to exchanges of genetic software). In general, SEX parties are a Good Thing, but unprotected SEX can propagate a virus. “Illicit SEX can transmit viral diseases to your computer.”

    2. The rather Freudian mnemonic often used for Sign EXtend, a machine instruction found in the PDP-11 and many other architectures. The RCA 1802 chip used in the early Elf and SuperElf personal computers had a ‘SEt X register’ SEX instruction, but this seems to have had little folkloric impact. The Data General instruction set also had SEX.
