PROJECT INFORMATION SHEET

Adoption from Afar

‘My Name is Gaza’

‘To this Child we cannot answer “Tomorrow”. His name is “Today”.’

G.M., 1948

Introduction

The humanitarian crisis in Gaza has reached alarming dimensions. As a result of the Israeli blockade imposed since 2007, there has been a severe impact on the provision of basic goods and health care services to the residents of Gaza, including those suffering from cancer.

The children in Gaza which constitute 56% of the total population, and especially those suffering from chronic diseases have been affected profoundly by the blockade . As of 2008, approximately 340 children suffered from cancer and blood related diseases and there has been a devastating shortage of cancer-related medicines and life-saving treatments for these children, which increases further their physical discomfort.

Project background information

‘My Name is Gaza’ sponsorship project aims to improve the wellbeing and quality of life of Gaza children suffering from cancer related diseases, or who are orphans from father or both parents. It also aims to establish a lasting personal relationship between the sponsor and the supporting children in Gaza.

The project runs in collaboration with the ‘Women’s Federation for World Peace’ (WFWP) and the Gaza based ‘Palestinian Medical Relief Society’ (PMRS).

Field work

For the purpose of the project, and after obtaining permission from the Ministry of Health in Gaza, a survey was conducted by a Cypriot volunteer in July 2009. Following a meeting with the local hospitals’ directors, the Cyprus representative together with a staff of the PMRS visited the oncology departments of Al-Nasser and European Hospital, located in Gaza city and Khan Younis, respectively, and interviewed the families/personal doctors and photographed the children. Some of the families were interviewed at the offices of the PMRS and the personal doctor was interviewed at a later stage. Upon the family’s consent, a copy of the medical report of the children was also obtained.

Sponsorship Scheme FAQ

  • How much does a sponsorship cost?

Sponsoring a child suffering from cancer related disease costs €70 Euro per month, and sponsoring an orphan costs €40 Euro per month. If you are unable to meet this full cost, you can share the sponsoring of a child with other people. In case of children suffering from cancer, you have the possibility to either fully sponsor the child (€70 Euro per month), or share the sponsorship with another person (€35 each) or other two sponsors (€25 each). In case of orphans, you can either meet the full cost of the sponsorship on an individual basis (€40 Euro/per month) or share the sponsorship with another person (€20 each) (currently the needs of orphans have been covered). Should you decide to share the sponsorship of a child, the organization will be responsible for identifying the other sponsors, unless you recommend the person you would like to share the sponsorship with.

  • How long does a sponsorship last?

The sponsorship will last for a minimum of 3 years and will be renewable. Although we are hoping for all the children suffering from cancer a smooth and quick recovery, there might be a case where a diseased child loses the battle with cancer. If a child is deceased the corresponding sponsors will be informed and asked whether they would like to continue their participation in the scheme by sponsoring another child.

3. Will I receive any information on the child’s progress?

The sponsors will receive annual information packs for the children they are sponsoring, which will include updated information and photographs of the child and when agreed by the parents, of the family as well. There will also be an opportunity to establish contacts with the children and their families in Gaza. During the field visits of our volunteers to the Gaza Strip, the sponsors will have the opportunity to send presents and messages of hope to the children they are sponsoring. When feasible, written or video recorded messages from the children in Gaza will also be delivered to the sponsors.

  • How can I ensure that my donations are reaching the child I am sponsoring?

The sponsors will sign a contract which will include the bank account that has been opened for this purpose and will be able to pay the due amount, either by standing order or cash deposit. The deposit can be done either monthly or as an advance payment for three months, six months, or one year. You will also be given a child’s code (GAZA ID) , which will need to be given to the bank, along with the sponsor’s name every time the deposit is made, in order for our organizations to be able to manage the received donations appropriately.

The donations will be sent to Gaza at the PMRS’ account. Thereafter, PMRS will distribute the corresponding money to each child by issuing a cheque, a copy of which will be sent back to the ‘Volunteer Doctors – Cyprus’, who will then forward it to the sponsors.
